Over the past decade, the Foundation has highlighted the national security implications of global warming to spur federal action needed to combat climate change. This approach combines Senator Jackson’s central policy concerns, including his commitments to national security and the environment. Through our grantmaking and programs, we help advance climate security efforts and encourage bipartisan support for climate action.
Since 2015, the Foundation has partnered with the Council on Strategic Risks’ Center for Climate and Security (CCS) to spotlight global warming as a national security threat. CCS just published a report with recommendations aimed at the new administration to address the impacts of the climate crisis. According to the briefer, the United States should focus on the following climate security actions:
- Prioritize domestic resilience to disasters
- Strengthen the US military’s competitive edge through improving its resilience to climate effects
- Invest in upstream prevention and resilience with US allies and partners
- Accelerate efforts to address global food and water insecurity
The paper describes in more detail the pathways of climate security risks that are most concerning to the United States and outlines policy actions the incoming administration can take in the coming year to address these risks.
